A Project by Ars Electronica and Mauthausen Memoraial
During the installation all the names of the victims of the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp system are projected and read out. The aim is to remember the 90.000 people who lost their lives and that behind this unimaginable number are the individual fates of people from different walksof life. Each one with their own story, each one with their very own name.
In previous years, #eachnamematters has taken place at the Mauthausen Memorial or at several locations of the former Gusen concentration camp – in 2022 at the Memorial de Gusen (the biggest concentration camp on austrian soil) in Langenstein (AT), and in 2023 outside the “Bergkristall“ tunnel complex wich was part of the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp systm. Thousands of prisoners built the underground tunnel system, which was used for the armaments industry in St. Georgen (AT). In 2024 the names were projected on the Art University Linz, whose buildings were originally contructed by the Nazi regime. In 2025 the project is set to be shown at Heldenplatz in Vienna, where Hitler announced the “Anschluss“ (annexation) of Austria in 1938.
